Syria: A Brighter Future for Hadi

September 17, 2026

Eleven-year-old Hadi (not his real name) lives in Latakia, Syria, with his mother and siblings. In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and his family’s financial hardships, Hadi struggled with sadness and loneliness. Hadi’s mother, concerned for her son, enrolled him in a children’s program run by IOCC and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, Department of Ecumenical Relations and Development (GOPA-DERD) and funded by the Presbyterian Church (USA).

The sessions were designed to help young people build resilience and emotional well-being. Although Hadi was initially hesitant to attend, once involved he began to eagerly anticipate the weekly sessions. Through games, group activities, and guided discussions, Hadi learned how to recognize and process his emotions.

“The sessions helped me make friends and feel more confident,” Hadi says. “Now I like joining activities and talking with the other children. I’m always excited for the next session.”

Hadi’s sister had previously participated in the program, giving Hadi’s mother faith in its positive impact. “I feel more confident that my children will look to the future with greater confidence,” she said.
