Greece: Celebrating Success, Looking Ahead at Frontistirio

With support from IOCC, the Social Frontistirio of the Archdiocese of Athens offers specialized tutoring for talented students who otherwise couldn’t afford it. These lessons, typically expensive, are necessary for success in the Panhellenic Examinations, Greece’s university entrance exams. With its high-quality courses offered free of charge, Frontistirio is opening a path to higher education to hardworking students.

Celebrating the success of Frontistirio’s most recent graduates, His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece recently hosted the young women and men—together with their teachers (all volunteers), IOCC’s Greece program manager, and the school’s director—at the Archdiocese with appropriate health-safety measures in place. While the pandemic made this year particularly challenging, with support from IOCC and Church partner Apostoli, during Greece’s lockdown Frontistirio quickly moved all lessons online and saw students through to their goal of scoring well in the Panhellenic Exams.

His Beatitude congratulated the students and wished them every success in their continued studies. In turn, the students expressed gratitude for the support and training they’ve received through the Archdiocese’s program.

This important program continues, with measures in place to protect the health of students, staff, and teachers. Courses are being held partly in person, with appropriate precautions, and partly online. In early October, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Athens performed the traditional annual blessing (agiasmos) at the Social Frontistirio with safety measures in place, inaugurating the new school year.
