Down, set, hut, hut… the center snaps his wrists and the ball darts between his legs to the holder, who mechanically turns the laces out and puts the football down. Meanwhile, the kicker is already in motion, his leg swinging all the way back. The crowd collectively holds its breath. The kicker’s leg swings forward and — boom — he hits the ball dead on. It sails through the goalposts 62 yards away — and Dan Christopulos, the ultimate team player and faith-inspired kicker, had just set a Wyoming Cowboy and national record for the longest field goal in school history.
Dan always met challenges head on and would eventually answer God’s call and take his athletic, leadership and communication gifts to serve the Orthodox Christian Church as a priest, a missionary, and as humanitarian with IOCC for almost 19 years. Serving in various fundraising roles and as US Country Representative. Dan played a critical role in IOCC’s formative years.
He went on to work at our sister organization OCMC as Development Director, continuing his mission work.
Last week I had the humbling and inspiring opportunity to visit Dan at his home at the start of his hospice care. Just like he did when he kicked the record field goal, he battled cancer methodically, practically, humbly and faithfully. His faith and love of Christ never faltered or waned. His quick wit and smile peered through whatever pain he was feeling. In the last hour we were together, we laughed, reminisced, and prayed.
Surrounded by his wife, daughters and whole family, the ultimate team player — Christ centered Cowboy reposed in the Lord.
Dan, your courage and faith in the face of death was incredible. And as we agreed when we embraced for the last time, we have each other’s backs 24/7 in this life and the next.
May Your Memory Be Eternal! Love you man!
