IOCC’s US Program, which focuses on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, relies on volunteers to get much of the day-to-day hands-on work done. Teams spend days or weeks in the field with our staff, cleaning up after storms or repairing and rebuilding homes to make them safe and livable again after disasters.
One strong partner through the years has been AmeriCorps NCCC, with a team of AmeriCorps volunteers now supporting IOCC’s ongoing recovery work in Kentucky. Together, we’re rebuilding homes and communities after the extremely destructive 2021 tornadoes.
On the ground with IOCC since late June, the Kentucky AmeriCorps team has learned drywalling, trim work, and decking from IOCC’s Action Team leads. So far, the team has worked on two different homes, drywalling major sections of one. They’re now in the process of building a deck with a wheelchair ramp to make the home more accessible for its owner. The work continues, with progress every day.
It can take years following an event like this before recovery is complete, and IOCC often serves affected communities long after media coverage of a given disaster has faded. We’re grateful to work alongside committed partners in service, including AmeriCorps.
