Ethiopia: Supporting Women with Livelihood Opportunities

June 14, 2025

Birtalu, a 46-year-old mother of four, owns a small plot of land which helps provide food and income for herself and her children. Unfortunately, this land doesn’t yield what it once did. “My small plot is degraded and unproductive, which leads to food shortages for my family every year,” Birtalu explained.

However, things changed for Birtalu when she was selected by a beneficiary committee to receive support from IOCC’s Food Security and Resilience Building Project. As a result, she received 12 chickens which soon began to lay eggs. “Now, the hens lay eggs daily, which I use to feed my children and sell at the market. These eggs have become a crucial source of income for my family.”

Birtalu is extremely grateful for the training and material support she’s received through IOCC, and has even expressed an intention to expand her poultry business by acquiring more chickens to produce more eggs. The extra income has also helped further her children’s education. “This has allowed me to purchase school materials for my children on time, something I could never afford before.”
