US: Long-Term Help after Hurricane Ian

April 20, 2023

Visiting Florida neighborhoods hit by Hurricane Ian to provide emotional and spiritual care was an early part of IOCC’s response. Later, the US team also helped survivors repair storm damage to their homes.

“I have never been in a position to ever need help, and this time I truly did,” said Toula, a resident of Cape Coral, Florida, whose home was damaged in October 2022 by Hurricane Ian. “Your act of kindness helped me very, very much. Words will never be enough.”

In the early aftermath of Hurricane Ian, IOCC put Frontliners on the ground to provide emotional and spiritual care. They visited shelters, met people in their neighborhoods, and ministered to homeowners, community members, and parishioners. IOCC also worked with local Orthodox parishes to get help to families affected by the storm—Toula was one of them. She wrote to IOCC to share her gratitude. “I can’t tell you enough how much this meant to me,” she said.

“I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for…helping me from my loss during Hurricane Ian. Never did I think I would ever go through something like this and lose everything, but with my strong faith in God I am getting through this one day at a time. Your gift is helping me more than you know…Thank you again not only for me but even the other families you helped in our community.”

Though Hurricane Ian is out of the news, people in its path are still recovering. Because of your support, IOCC can offer longer-term assistance as well as immediate relief in emergencies for people like Toula.
