IOCC Volunteer Update | April 2019

April 30, 2019

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

Wishing our IOCC family great hope and joy in the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

April is National Volunteer Month

Thank you for dedicating your time and efforts to helping those in need around the world. Volunteers make a huge impact to IOCC’s mission, both in dedicating hours as well as leading fundraising. Did you know, in 2018…

  • 145 volunteers raised $50,347 through DIY for IOCC fundraising and Facebook fundraisers
  • 1,596 volunteers organized 71 fundraising events and 32 awareness events across 74 cities, raising more than $792,103
  • 254 volunteers repaired 15 homes and mucked out 69 homes in the US. They clocked more than 7,301 hours

DIY for IOCC: You’re Inspired, now what?

Do you have a wedding, baptism, or birthday coming up this summer? If you’d like to support IOCC with your special day (or for any other occasion!), consider starting a personal fundraising page through IOCC’s website. Connect your family and friends with the work IOCC does through the power of your social network and BE THE DIFFERENCE for someone in need. Check it out at iocc.org/diy, or email outreach@iocc.org to get started—and thank you!

Metropolitan Committees & Volunteers: Keep in Touch!

If an important life event happens to someone on your committee, such as a baptism, marriage, or death, please let us know. Call us at 410.243.9820, or email outreach@iocc.org—IOCC wants to be able to recognize these important moments with you. And thank you in advance!

IOCC Responds After Nebraska Flooding

Following devastating floods across the Midwest, International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) deployed a US emergency response team in Nebraska to address practical and intangible needs.

After initial assessments across the Omaha area, IOCC volunteers are now engaged in emergency muck-and-gut operations to clear flooded homes of mud, debris, and water-soaked items in Valley and Hanson Lake, Nebraska. IOCC’s emergency action teams comprise groups of volunteers headed by trained team leaders and are supported by an emergency response vehicle stocked with tools and supplies. Read more here.

Summer Internship in Minneapolis

IOCC is offering an internship for the summer of 2019 with the IOCC US Program in Minneapolis, Minnesota, working in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, and youth engagement in service learning. Visit iocc.org/internship to read more and apply.

Volunteer for an Upcoming Home Build

As summer approaches, IOCC has several volunteer opportunities to support long-term recovery projects after disasters. Communities affected by these catastrophes often face great need long after the crisis has ended, and we are looking for volunteers to help repair and rebuild homes (no skills required). Current opportunities include:

  • June 3-8: Houston, TX
  • July 8-13: Houston, TX
  • July 15-20: Houston, TX (18+ only)
  • July 22-27: Houston, TX
  • August 19-24: Houston, TX (18+ only)

Please visit iocc.org/homebuild to read more and apply.

Volunteers in Action

Let us know about your kit drives and IOCC presentations—email images and brief write-ups to outreach@iocc.org so we can feature them here. And thank you!

Rye, NY

Laurence Maalouf and her mom (and dog!) took a mini road trip from New York to drop off about 120 school kits at our warehouse in Maryland last month. These kits were graciously assembled by the GOYAns at the Greek Orthodox Church of Our Saviour—thanks to Laurence and all the volunteers for making kits so that children around the world can continue learning!
