When Abraham — a priest’s son, like me — was only six, his legs began to swell. Walking became painful; he couldn’t attend school or play with his friends. He had podoconiosis (“podo”), a disease caused by walking barefoot on Ethiopia’s volcanic soil.

After years of searching for help, Abraham’s family found a clinic sponsored by IOCC. There, he received treatment and custom-made boots. When I met him on a field visit, his treatment was taking hold. He was excited to play soccer again, free of the pain and embarrassment the illness caused. As the priest and I stood together watching Abraham play, love and hope for his son beamed from Father’s heart.
