Healing the Whole Person

April 19, 2021

Emotional and spiritual care is part of IOCC’s disaster response work in the US, recognizing that disasters disrupt not only our physical circumstances but also our hearts.

“[Our work] is not for the fainthearted, but is a vocation that is as challenging as it is satisfying,” said Abbott Tryphon of Vashon Island, an IOCC Frontliner (not pictured).

Spirituality is a core part of the human experience, so when a disaster disrupts life, emotional and spiritual care contribute to healing the whole person. The inner damage is often great, and the need is deep.

IOCC’s Orthodox Frontline has been a key part of our emergency response network in the US since 2001. One Frontliner began to better understand the impact of emotional and spiritual care after serving those affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas: “I came away with a phenomenal appreciation of the spiritual care component.”

In 2020, when the pandemic made in-person care unfeasible, Frontliners helped IOCC create digital tools that they — and anyone — could use to offer that care amid crisis, while physically separated. Care Compass and Care Calls were the result.

Your support allows crucial care to continue for our neighbors in need, whether in person or by phone, both in the US and around the world.
