US Emergency Response: Thank You, Philoptochos

December 17, 2021

IOCC is deeply grateful for the continued support of the National Philoptochos Society, a long-time donor and partner. Most recently, generous gifts from Philoptochos have funded efforts to serve those affected by natural disasters in the US—flooding in Tennessee, and Hurricane Ida in Louisiana. Here’s a glimpse of what those gifts made possible:

Hurricane Ida Response | Louisiana

  • Phase I (September–October): IOCC Site Supervisor deployed with 3 team leads and 2 Frontliners to New Orleans and St. Charles Parish. Worked with partner and 2 AmeriCorps teams; completed 2,340 hours of volunteer labor. Frontliners provided 63 hours of emotional and spiritual care.
  • Phase II (November–December): Additional deployments of 3 Frontliners and 4 team leads. IOCC was awarded 3rd AmeriCorps team. Completed 847 hours of volunteer labor in muck outs and 59 hours of emotional and spiritual care.
  • To date, 32 homes have been mucked out, with 35 more lined up. Work is slated to continue January–March 2022.

Flood Response | Waverly, Tennessee

  • IOCC Site Supervisor and 1 team lead deployed for 14 days with Emergency Response Vehicle.
  • Assessments determined that much of the cleanup work was being handled by partner organizations and IOCC could be most effective helping out in the donations warehouse.
  • 2 IOCC volunteers worked over 130 hours in the warehouse, unloading and organizing over 5 semi-trucks of donated goods to be distributed to flood-affected people in Waverly.
  • IOCC subgranted $4,000 to partner Inspiritus Disaster Relief Team for local response, including getting volunteers into the area and to work sites, and fuel for diesel equipment and vehicles. Inspiritus served 360 individuals during the grant period, including children, elderly, veterans, and people with disabilities.
